Luis Barragan Pink is real

Since we're on the topic today...
It occurred to me that
Luis Barragan takes
the controversy out
of Pink
forever

No! his architecture says
real men do live here
these muscular volumes
crash into each other
not as giddy playmates
in the schoolyard
or gossiping neighbors
garishly clad
in Latin fifties
fashions
Discipline, austerity, and
rigor
he tells us is not
bloodless

Modernism he tells us is not
a hell of grey

His modernism plays as hard as it works
it has wit but makes
no jokes
It is fecund with
sensuality
it means its
place in the
world

Magenta ain't a colour-hmmm

Magenta Ain't A Colour

By Liz Elliott
A beam of white light is made up of all the colours in the spectrum. The range extends from red through to violet, with orange, yellow, green and blue in between. But there is one colour that is notable by its absence.

Pink (or magenta, to use its official name) simply isn’t there. But if pink isn’t in the light spectrum, how come we can see it?

Here’s an experiment you can try: stare at the pink circle below for about one minute, then look over at the blank white space next to the image. What do you see? You should see an afterimage. What colour is it?

Raw color

00%SAP is a project about the power of natural color. Vegetables are transformed to a natural ink to feed a new printing process. This process enables the viewer to watch the posters print slightly grow. A 3-D ingredient returns as 2-D icon.

Red Couch

There was a book I have
come across in the past
 called
The red couch
which showed the same red couch
in a hundred different
and sometimes
improbable
settings. Sometimes even
dangling from a crane

The red couch was the subject of
an entire artistic
exercise.  The artist was trying to
communicate something I
can only
approximate

Here is another artist
a different red couch

His message is less
urgent
but evocative nevertheless.

VIOLET

Liz invented celebrity.

Raf Simons after my own heart

A column of yellow silk
the swing of pink atop white
a block of emerald suspended
between jewel tones
a knit sweater of robins egg blue that could
only belong
over tangerine
Magenta tailored
tightly for the little
man

this is serious stuff

Black as Akbar

Somewhere the muezzin was calling the
faithful to prayer
And devotees of a different sort
Pounded on the dance floor here at Akbar

At first it was an effort
A tinge of shame
Threw me off the beat
Shame for having lost
My youth

I wanted to scream
For New York in the 80's
For the Peppermint Lounge, the Pyramid Club
And Stephen Sprouse

The Edges where sharp
The music was cheesy
Epiphany was near

Then the miraculous happened
The unmistakeable croon of George Michael's 'Freedom'
Snuck into the dance mix
Here, tonight, and the crowd went wild

Freedom! Fists pumped, Freedom!
Yes! that was it
To dance and chant in this black box
To this anthem with strangers
Freedom!
All of us a ferment of blood
Ignorance and time
that birthed the obvious
Freedom!
This moment
So denied to many

Freedom!

Who would not die for that?

Ben Van Os

Ahhh Red!
Production designer Ben van Os is the ultimate craftsman/artist. His work for Peter Greenaway movies ( Prospero's Books, The Thief, the Cook, his Wife and her Lover) are drenched in color, irony, history and above all craftsmanship.

Umbrellas of Cherbourg

Aside from Catherine Deneuve who is ripe as a peach, color is the other protagonist of this film. It is almost shocking how deliberate the use of color is. It serves not just to amuse in that swinging 60's sort of way but to confront and subvert ideas or conventions we have about sexuality, honor, brutality and beauty.
